The people shaping Lido’s September 2026 stETH v2 upgrade

Validator consolidation and the Pectra influence
Lido moves 8 million ETH, worth $16.5 billion, into a new validator architecture. This migration targets 265,000 legacy 0x01 validators. The Pectra upgrade enables 0x02 withdrawal credentials, which allow a single validator to hold up to 2,048 ETH. Previously, every 32 ETH deposit required a new validator, which increased consensus traffic, memory requirements, processing time, and bandwidth consumption. The transition from the legacy 0x01 credentials to the 0x02 architecture allows thousands of smaller validators to merge into fewer, larger entities that can secure up to 2,048 ETH each while maintaining the same level of economic security. This shift changes the total Ethereum validator count from 880,000 to approximately 628,000. The reduction in validators decreases attestation messages by 29% per epoch. This change reduces consensus layer overhead without altering gas fees or transaction throughput. The reduction in validator identities does not reduce the total amount of ETH securing the network. This migration is the largest infrastructure overhaul for Lido since its 2020 launch. The process is expected to finish by Q1 2027.
Economic accountability through operator bonds
The Curated Module v2 introduces economic accountability for the 34 professional node operators. These operators must post ETH-backed bonds to cover downtime, slashing, or reward violations and operational errors. Lido classifies these entities as Decentralization, Extra Effort, or Public Good operators. You know the protocol relies on its validator set for stability. This framework replaces the reputation-only model with mandatory penalty mechanisms. The upgrade is built on Staking Router v3. Stakers face a temporary 0.28% annual reduction in rewards during the consolidation process. The Curated Module holds 90% of Lido’s stake as of July 2026. This module includes seven Ethereum client teams. The DAO retains authority over the composition of the Node Operator set. The classification system allows the protocol to recognize different levels of contribution to infrastructure resilience and Ethereum public goods. This ensures that the 34 professional operators remain aligned with the interests of stakers.
Permissionless scaling with CSM v3
P2P Validator remains a primary validator and operator within the Lido ecosystem. Konstantin Lomashuk and Vasiliy Shapovalov manage the firm. The Community Staking Module (CSM) holds 770,000 ETH across 335 operators, representing 8.5% of Lido TVL. CSM v3 introduces the Identified DVT Cluster (IDVTC) type. Operators using IDVTC pay a bond of 0.5 to 1.5 ETH per key. This model provides 3.1x capital efficiency compared to solo staking. The Simple DVT module runs 323 operators in 57 Obol and SSV clusters, which accounts for 4% of the stake. The transition to CSM v3 follows 1.5 years of battle-testing for the module. The CSM is the largest alternative to solo staking in the ecosystem.
| Module | Operator Type | Bond Requirement | Capital Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curated Module v2 | Professional | ETH-backed bond | N/A |
| CSM (IDVTC) | Community | 0.5 – 1.5 ETH | 3.1x |
| Simple DVT | DVT Cluster | N/A | N/A |
The CSM provides paths for existing Simple DVT participants to transition to solo operator status or IDVTC clusters through specific parameters. Agile governance replaces traditional Aragon governance for CSM through the Easy Track mechanism. Can the migration finish by the projected Q1 2027 deadline?
