Mantle mETH and cmETH liquid staking and restaking mechanics

Mantle network growth and mETH status

Mantle’s DeFi TVL reached $1.006 billion in March 2026. The mETH Protocol holds over $1.6 billion in TVL. cmETH holds the fifth largest position among Ethereum restaking tokens. Mantle manages a treasury with $4.3 billion in assets. The mETH Protocol is a liquid staking and restaking platform. It issues mETH for ETH staking and cmETH for restaking across EigenLayer, Karak, and Symbiotic. This protocol works on the Ethereum mainnet. It allows users to delegate ETH to participate in the Ethereum Proof-of-Stake mechanism. The process is non-custodial and permissionless. Users receive mETH as proof of their stake.

Mantle Network is a modular Layer 2 solution built on Ethereum. It is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The network provides higher scalability and lower costs. The mETH Protocol is a flagship financial application within the Mantle ecosystem. It converts illiquid staking into flexible on-chain assets. The growth of the mETH token led to the rebranding of the protocol from Mantle LSP to mETH Protocol. This change followed the passage of the MIP-30 governance proposal.

mETH and cmETH yield mechanisms

The mETH Protocol is a liquid staking and restaking platform. It issues mETH for ETH staking and cmETH for restaking across EigenLayer, Karak, and Symbiotic. mETH is a reward-bearing token. It accumulates rewards from block issuance, priority fees, and Maximal Extractable Value. cmETH is an evolved version of mETH. It is a liquid restaking token.

You know the basics of liquid staking, so I will focus on the yield mechanics of the mETH ecosystem. The cmETH Fixed Yield Vault is a new option for predictable returns. It provides a 2% fixed annual yield on top of Ethereum staking rewards. The Mantle Treasury backs this 2% yield. This option is for users who want certainty over speculative rewards. Participants in the vault forgo staking shares and "powder" (points) rewards. Institutional users can hold $cmETH in wallets to earn the 2% yield. Retail users get a simplified option without the complexity of managing variable rewards. Rewards in the vault accumulate continuously. Users can claim rewards when the balance is greater than 0.

Asset Mechanism Yield Sources
mETH Liquid Staking Block rewards, fees, MEV
cmETH Liquid Restaking L1 restaking and AVS rewards
cmETH Vault Fixed Yield ETH rewards plus 2% Mantle yield

The mETH Protocol provides rewards from block issuance, priority fees, and Maximal Extractable Value. The rewards grow automatically in the value of the mETH held by users. The protocol allocates a portion of total rewards to validator operators and system infrastructure to ensure sustainability.

Protocol Type Fee Operator Count
Lido Liquid Staking 10% ~38
Rocket Pool Liquid Staking 14% ~3,200
Coinbase Exchange 35% 1
Mantle (mETH) Liquid Staking Variable 12

Slashing risks and the cmETH cascade

The cmETH restaking process relies on a three-layer stack of ETH, mETH, and cmETH, meaning a disruption at the Ethereum or mETH layer cascades through the entire restaking architecture because the value of cmETH depends on the success of both underlying layers. A slashing event on an EigenLayer AVS reduces cmETH value. This happens when a validator breaks rules. This loss propagates to all cmETH holders. A slashing event on an AVS combined with an mETH/ETH depeg exceeding 2% creates a cascade. The value of cmETH drops because slashed mETH leaves the restaking portfolio. cmETH holders then rush to unstake and redeem mETH. This pressure can exceed the capacity of the Aave liquidity buffer. If the pressure exceeds this buffer, cmETH trades at a discount on decentralized exchanges. This depeg creates losses for both mETH and cmETH holders.

The mETH operator set is smaller than the Lido set. Mantle uses 12 professional operators. A slashing event affecting one of these 12 operators has a larger impact than an event affecting one of Lido’s 38 operators. Mantle maintains an insurance reserve to handle slashing.

Institutional adoption and yield stability

Republic Technologies uses mETH on its balance sheet. This is the first time a publicly listed company like Republic Technologies holds a liquid staking token on its balance sheet. Republic Technologies is the Ethereum treasury of the Canadian company Beyond Medical Technologies Inc. Republic Technologies plans to delegate a portion of its ETH holdings to the mETH Protocol. The company holds mETH as a yield-bearing asset. Daniel Liu, the CEO of Republic Technologies, says Wall Street decided on Ethereum.

Mantle uses 12 professional operators for its validator set. This is smaller than the 3,200 independent operators in the Rocket Pool network. I find the cmETH Fixed Yield Vault a sensible option for those who want stability, though the reliance on Mantle Treasury to cover the 2% yield makes the long-term sustainability a concern. mETH is the fourth largest ETH liquid staking protocol. It has over $1.6 billion in TVL. cmETH is the fifth largest restaking token. Will the 2% yield persist if Mantle Treasury assets fluctuate? I would skip the cmETH vault if I prioritized speculative points over fixed returns.
