BlackRock IBIT leads Bitcoin ETF market through fee advantages

IBIT dominates Bitcoin ETF inflows
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) reached a $45 billion assets under management milestone in October 2026. This achievement follows a period of intense buying, including a surge where investors poured $1.02 billion into IBIT between September 17 and September 22. On August 20, the fund alone attracted $503 million in inflows, which constituted 83% of the total daily net inflows across all Bitcoin ETF products. This specific day saw total daily net inflows across the category reach $606.3 million. The broader US spot Bitcoin ETF market reached approximately $96.1 billion in total assets following recent price rallies. Since the category launched in January 2024, these funds have accumulated $53.7 billion in cumulative net inflows. The momentum in the market grew even more during the start of "Uptober," when US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $241.1 million in the week ending October 5, 2026. This inflow streak helped support the Bitcoin price as it climbed toward $85,605. Earlier in August, the market saw a massive $1.92 billion inflow over five trading days ending August 22. During that period, Monday brought $297.6 million, Tuesday added $189.3 million, Wednesday saw $517.2 million, Thursday hit a peak of $606.3 million, and Friday provided $307.5 million.
Competitive fee structures drive adoption
Cost efficiency drives the competition between major asset managers. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) currently utilizes a 0.12% expense ratio on its first $5 billion of assets, which undercuts Fidelity’s FBTC by 3 basis points. This fee structure targets institutional interest, as the standard fee for IBIT on assets above the $5 billion threshold sits at 0.25%. The Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), which launched in April 2026 as the first spot Bitcoin ETF from a major U.S. bank, carries a 0.14% expense ratio. This makes it slightly more expensive than the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC), which charges 0.15%.
| ETF Ticker | Expense Ratio | Primary Custodian |
|---|---|---|
| IBIT | 0.12% (on first $5B) | Coinbase |
| MSBT | 0.14% | Coinbase & Fidelity |
| FBTC | 0.15% | Fidelity Digital Assets |
| BTC (Grayscale) | 0.15% | Coinbase |
| BITA (BlackRock) | 0.65% | Coinbase |
BlackRock also manages the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), which charges a 0.65% management fee. This fund generates income by selling covered call options on IBIT shares. This strategy targets annual yields of 15% to 25% by collecting premiums from option buyers. While BITA provides regular income, the strategy caps upside potential because the fund must deliver shares if Bitcoin rises past the strike price of the sold options.
Institutional trades move the market
Institutional shifts in holdings reveal how large players manage their crypto exposure. During the third quarter, Milestone Asset Management LLC reduced its IBIT position by 48.0%. Franchise GP Ltd also decreased its stake by 7.4%, which left them holding 231,433 shares valued at $10,956,000. In contrast, firms like 59 North Capital Management LP, NEOS Investment Management LLC, and Walleye Capital LLC increased their IBIT holdings throughout the quarter. Other firms, including Level Financial Advisors, Avior Wealth Management LLC, Fell Capital Management ADV, Horrell Capital Management Inc., and Farther Finance Advisors LLC, also made notable adjustments to their positions. C2P Capital Advisory Group reduced its IBIT stake by 28.3% in Q3. B. Riley Wealth Advisors Inc. increased its holdings in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF by 213.7% in Q3, acquiring 13,176 additional shares for a total of 19,341 shares valued at $1,249,000.
Large-scale liquidity events also impact market stability. On May 27, 2026, a single dark-pool block sale involving 29 million IBIT shares moved $1.29 billion. This massive trade occurred when Bitcoin faced downward pressure. IBIT net assets reached $46.3 billion as of July 9, 2026, after the fund pulled in $209 million in a single day on July 6. In April 2026, cumulative inflows hit $3 billion for the month alone. However, in May 2026, IBIT accounted for $448.36 million of the $648.64 million in total net outflows across all spot Bitcoin funds.
Revenue potential scales with price
The economic incentive for BlackRock increases alongside the price of Bitcoin. If Bitcoin reaches $300,000 and IBIT maintains a holding of 800,000 BTC, BlackRock will generate approximately $600 million in annual fee revenue. This figure assumes a standard fee of 0.25% on an AUM of $240 billion. The dominance of IBIT in the ETF market remains clear because the fund captured $503 million in inflows on a single day in August, which accounted for 83% of the total daily inflows across all Bitcoin ETF products.
Bitcoin’s price movements also influence the attractiveness of these products. After rallying in August due to US Treasury buyback expansions, Bitcoin tested the $80,000 level and later reached $85,605. In late September, IBIT saw $1.02 billion in inflows over four trading sessions, even as Bitcoin price cooled from intraday highs near $87,300 to $84,000. Will the Morgan Stanley distribution network eventually erode BlackRock’s dominance? You should watch how these fee changes affect your long-term allocation. IBIT is the premier choice for traders needing liquidity and low costs.
