Bitcoin volatility selling contracts and basis shifts

The 9/4 session pushed realized volatility to 39.5, which exceeded the market charge of 39.15, and this forced volatility-selling positions to decrease after a single day moved bitcoin 3.8% in a way that single days can do. Price rose 3.4%. The 9/2 settlement of $77,534 marked the weekly low. Brent oil topped $95 as US strikes hit Iranian targets. The ETH/BTC ratio held at 0.0313. Most calls on the board concentrate at the $80k strike with 20,000 contracts. A break below $78.5k would meet fewer buyers because the protective puts underneath thinned all week.

The CME bitcoin annualised basis fell to -2.35%. This level marks the deepest backwardation since the November 2022 FTX collapse. Backwardation signals that traders expect lower prices in the future. Will the basis return to contango before the next volatility event?

Divergent institutional flows

Alex Blume, CEO of Two Prime, says the combination of one large directional buyer and exiting hedged yield farmers creates an unusual market structure. He claims the basis trade is largely finished. CME bitcoin open interest recently fell below $10 billion. Strategy purchased 4,603 BTC at an average price of $80,318 using $603M of ATM proceeds. Spot ETFs saw $731M in inflows on 9/3.

Funding stayed at zero.

The 7-day moving average bitcoin funding rate hit -1.8%. This mark is the lowest since 2023. You should watch the 9/11 CPI. Strategy holdings stand at 845,050 BTC with an average cost of $75,412, remaining about 6% below spot. Spot ETF inflows reached $990M for the week, totaling $3.8B over three weeks.

Legislative hurdles

The Senate scheduled a procedural vote for the Clarity Act on September 15. This follows the Senate adjournment for its August recess. Senator Ruben Gallego seeks a bipartisan compromise regarding ethics language. The bill requires consensus from both Republicans and Democrats. The CLARITY Act’s procedural vote stays queued for after the Senate returns 9/14, with little industry confidence in passage this month.

Unemployment held at 4.1% with earnings at +3.1% year on year. Friday’s payrolls print of +162k against a 53k consensus gave back 2-3% of that gain. Governor Waller said he would support holding rates in September. The 2-year yield reached its highest print since January 2025. Crypto-backed political groups spent more than $200 million in the 2024 election cycle to elect candidates friendly to the industry.
