Bitcoin’s September $64,800 weekly RSI divergence and retail trap

Divergence signals fail in strong trends

I watch momentum traders chase the $80,000 resistance while ignoring the warnings. BitcoinHypers identified a hidden bearish divergence on the weekly chart where the price reaches a higher high near $80,000 while the weekly RSI also establishes a higher high. This mismatch shows that upward momentum lacks the strength to confirm the price structure. Many traders ignore these warnings because they expect a reversal that does not happen immediately. In a strong trend, the RSI often stays in overbought territory above 70 for long periods, and this tricks buyers into believing the trend has already broken. This price action mirrors the June 2026 period when Bitcoin saw losses of nearly 19%. That decline marked the sharpest of the year. Regular bearish divergence occurs when the price reaches a higher high but the RSI makes a lower high, which signals weakening bullish momentum. Hidden bullish divergence occurs during a correction when the price makes a higher low while the RSI makes a lower low. Traders must wait for the candle to close to confirm these signals.

Retail leverage and Bitstamp’s 10x limit

Bitstamp by Robinhood launched perpetual futures for EU traders under the MiFID II regulatory framework, yet retail traders still face massive risks. These non-professional investors often fall for bull traps where prices break resistance on low volume only to reverse sharply. While Bitstamp caps leverage at 10x to mitigate volatility, high volatility still triggers liquidations when the market moves against a position. These liquidations automatically close losing trades and forfeit the initial margin. You should know that liquidity from high-frequency trading can disappear in seconds. Traders frequently enter long positions when the price breaks above a resistance level, but they often fail to account for the fact that momentum can weaken significantly even as the price continues to reach new highs. Institutional investors trade in quantities of 10,000 or more, whereas retail traders trade in small amounts and remain vulnerable to FOMO. High-frequency trading uses computers to conduct many trades in a small amount of time and often creates ghost liquidity that vanishes during volatility. Bitstamp serves over four million retail and institutional traders, but the automation of HFT creates a different environment for manual traders.

The reality of backtested momentum

The numbers tell a darker story than most technical analysis videos. A backtest on BTCUSDT daily data from January 2022 to June 2026 shows that a simple RSI divergence strategy lost 46.1% of its value. The strategy rules required RSI(14) to fall below 30 within five days followed by a cross back above 40. This strategy only produced nine trades in four and a half years and achieved a win rate of just 22.2%. It failed to outperform a simple buy-and-hold approach, which returned 22.8% over the same window. The strategy experienced a maximum drawdown of 46.7% while the buy-and-hold method saw a 67.0% drawdown. A negative Sharpe ratio of -0.56 confirms the strategy took on volatility without compensation. The strategy also used a 20-day Donchian lower band as a protective exit if the low broke. The RSI calculation uses the average of up closes divided by the average of down closes to find the RS value. This value determines if the momentum is sufficient to support price moves. Does the widening gap between price action and momentum always signal a correction?
