CFOs driving Bitcoin treasury waves as Toyota overtakes Tesla

Metaplanet Inc. holds 43,000 BTC worth $3,750 million, which exceeds the 11,509 BTC held by Tesla, Inc. in its legacy stack valued at $1,004 million, marking a significant shift in Japanese corporate Bitcoin ownership. This movement in Japanese corporate treasuries suggests a new wave of Bitcoin accumulation. Toyota promoted Kenta Kon from chief financial officer to CEO on April 1. This leadership change follows profit challenges where US tariffs cost Toyota $9 billion. Toyota’s full-year operating profit forecast stands at ¥3.8tn, an increase from the previous ¥3.4tn forecast. Elliott Investment Management also secured a $508 million profit from its dispute with Toyota Industries, where it acquired 23.3 million shares at an average price of ¥17,170. The tender offer price for those shares reached ¥20,600. This battle involved Akio Toyoda, the grandson of Toyota Motor Corp’s founder, who led a group to raise the tender offer for the company for a second time. Toyota aims to improve earning power by addressing the value chain as a whole. This reorganization follows a period where revenue grew nearly 8% to ¥13.457tn. John Seagrim of CLSA stated the deal for Toyota Industries was still a take under.
Japanese treasuries lead the accumulation
Corporate Bitcoin ownership reached a new high in early 2026 as institutions move from retail speculation to balance sheet integration. Large financial vehicles and corporate treasuries now dominate the flow of capital.
| Company | Ticker | Bitcoin | USD Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy | MSTR | 846,000 | $73,770M |
| Metaplanet Inc. | MPJPY | 43,000 | $3,750M |
| MARA Holdings | MARA | 35,577 | $3,102M |

| Tesla, Inc. | TSLA | 11,509 | $1,004M |
| Hyperscale Data | GPUS | 1,000 | $167M |
Metaplanet Inc. maintains a Bitcoin position that surpasses the 11,509 BTC held by Tesla, Inc. while MicroStrategy remains the leader with 846,000 BTC. MARA Holdings sold more than 15,000 BTC for $1.1 billion to repurchase convertible notes. Hyperscale Data, Inc. also surpassed 1,000 Bitcoin in its treasury to support AI infrastructure and humanoid robotics. Other Japanese firms like Nexon Co., Ltd. hold 1,717 BTC, while Remixpoint holds 1,501 BTC. Coinbase Global, Inc. holds 17,311 BTC and Block, Inc. maintains 9,117 BTC. These companies treat Bitcoin as a reserve asset rather than a speculative investment. This trend follows a period in February when corporate treasuries collectively added 7,800 BTC but disposed of 8,600 BTC. Prenetics, a consumer-health company, sold its entire 510 BTC position for $41 million. Since the April 2024 halving, treasury companies accumulated Bitcoin at about 2.8 times the rate of new mining output.
Strategic movers and the adaptive CFO
The strategic reallocation of capital into digital assets is a direct consequence of finance leaders seeking greater financial flexibility. Adaptive CFOs translate data and technology into strategic action to manage market volatility. This profile includes Strategic Movers who integrate new technology across multiple functions to achieve growth. For instance, Toyota launched two investment funds totaling $1.5 billion in September 2025 to support automation and AI. Many organizations integrate artificial intelligence and payments innovation to maintain resilience. Toyota also announced a $10 billion investment over five years into its US operations to focus on energy and AI. You might observe that these movements happen in isolation, but they connect to broader financial restructuring. Toyota’s earlier $11.2 billion investment plan for growth technologies began in May 2024. Toyota also works with NVIDIA to use the DRIVE AGX Orin platform and partners with NTT to build a $3.3 billion Mobility AI Platform. While many CFOs seek efficiency, 84% of them say they have not yet realized a return on their AI investments in finance. The company also uses Agility Robotics’ Digit humanoid robots for logistics and partners with Pony.ai for robotaxis. Will the current pace of Japanese accumulation persist if market volatility returns?
