Elastic Network architecture and the ZK token migration

Hyperchain rollout and the Atlas upgrade
Matter Labs completed the 20 hyperchain mainnet launch. The Atlas upgrade integrated ZKsync OS and Airbender into the ZKsync Gateway. In early Q1 2026, ZKsync Era and other chains on the Elastic Network moved settlement to Ethereum L1. This shift allowed the ZKsync Gateway to receive the latest ZK Stack components. This upgrade expands interop capabilities because it adds asset transfer support and interop calls and bundles to the existing cross-chain message passing. Some developers might need to update monitoring or indexing systems that rely on Gateway-specific contracts. During the early months of 2026, ZKsync Era and other chains on the Elastic Network moved their settlement process directly to Ethereum L1 to facilitate the deployment of the Atlas upgrade across the entire network as part of the transition. I see the 20 hyperchain mainnet launch as a way to scale the Elastic Network beyond its original limits.
ZK token economics and the $890 million migration
$890 million in ZK tokens migrated from ZKsync Era to native chain finality. This massive movement follows the June 2024 airdrop when 695,232 wallets claimed tokens. The distribution gave 89% to active users and 11% to ecosystem contributors. Within the total supply, the ZKsync Foundation holds 19.9% for ecosystem incentives and the Token Assembly holds 29.3% for governance. The team and investors hold another 34% of all tokens. I find the size of the $890 million migration significant for long-term stability.
The points system for the 695,232 eligible wallets relied on several specific criteria. The ZKsync team calculated points by multiplying the value of assets held by the duration those funds remained on the chain to determine the final allocation for every participating wallet. The team applied multiplier boosts for holders of ZKsync-native NFTs and ERC20s. They also included users who utilized account abstraction or held previous Ethereum airdrops. These multipliers helped target real users who took onchain risks. The ZKsync team checked every address that transacted on ZKsync Era or Lite chains against a list of qualifying interactions. The team also analyzed user behavior to assign points, prioritizing users who interacted with smart contracts on other chains to identify potential Sybil activity.
Binance also launched a distribution program for 52,500 users to address airdrop concerns. The program provided 10,500,000 ZK tokens. To qualify, users had to complete 50 transactions between February 2023 and March 2024. These transactions had to cover seven different months. Every eligible user received 200 ZK tokens. Users had to deposit a minimum of 0.02 ETH to their Binance account. The exchange distributed the tokens on a first-come, first-served basis. Users also had to ensure their addresses were not of a contract, CEX, or bridge and did not qualify for airdrops from the official ZK Nation airdrop.
Bridging assets to the ZKsync network
The official ZKsync Bridge connects Ethereum mainnet to ZKsync Era. Users connect a wallet like MetaMask, Rabby, or WalletConnect to the interface at bridge.zksync.io. You likely already know how rollups use ZKPs to verify transactions. The bridge locks ETH on the Ethereum mainnet and mints the equivalent native ETH on ZKsync Era. This process usually takes between 1 and 20 minutes. For withdrawals, users select ZKsync Era as the source and Ethereum as the destination. The bridge burns ETH on ZKsync and queues a transaction on Ethereum.
| Action | Timing | Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit ETH | 1 to 20 minutes | Ethereum L1 gas |
| Withdrawal Claim | 7 days (standard) | Ethereum L1 gas |
| Fast-Exit Withdrawal | Minutes | Small fee + Ethereum L1 gas |
The bridge delivers native ETH and ERC-20 tokens without wrapping or slippage. The bridge supports native ETH and major ERC-20 tokens like USDC, USDT, WBTC, and DAI. Users pay Ethereum L1 gas on deposits. On withdrawals, users pay Ethereum gas for the final claim after the challenge period. The 7-day challenge period ensures security for withdrawals. Fast-exit services use liquidity providers to reduce the wait to minutes for a small fee.
Ecosystem performance and dApp activity
ZKsync Era manages $136 million in value across several DeFi apps. SynSwap acts as the main market in the ecosystem. SynSwap volume increased by 2,358% to over $110 million when ZK trading began. The network hosts 2.38 million wallets, though 3.4 million wallets interacted with the network over time. The network has handled over 400 million transactions across over seven million addresses. I find it frustrating that the ZK price sits at $0.21 after hitting $0.321 in June 2024. Only 17.5% of the total supply of ZK currently circulates.
The ZK ecosystem includes various decentralized applications. Users can use Argent or MetaMask as wallets. The 1inch Network acts as a decentralized exchange aggregator. Balancer provides automated portfolio management and liquidity. Mute.io acts as an AMM DEX and DeFi suite. CyberConnect works as a decentralized social graph protocol. DeBank works as a Web3 messenger. Can the network maintain this volume if the ZK price continues to drop?
