Ethereum staking yields slip below 3 percent

Yield compression in 2026
Ethereum native staking APR sits at 2.78% for the 897,000 active validators in 2026. This figure stays well below the 5% yields seen in 2022 and 2023. More ETH enters the network, which spreads the fixed issuance across a larger validator set. I find the compression predictable.
The yield differs by venue. Solo stakers capture the 2.78% base APR plus MEV rewards, which add 0.5% to 1% to total returns. Liquid staking through providers like Lido or Rocket Pool delivers roughly 3.0% to 3.5% net yield after protocol fees. Centralized exchanges like Coinbase and Binance offer the lowest returns, usually between 2.5% and 3.0% after their fees.
| Staking Venue | Estimated Net Yield |
|---|---|
| Solo Staking (with MEV) | 3.3% to 3.8% |
| Liquid Staking | 3.0% to 3.5% |
| Centralized Exchanges | 2.5% to 3.0% |
The 2.78% base APR is the core of the calculation. MEV-Boost adds another 10% to 30% to validator rewards in 2026. Relay market share remains concentrated among few players, such as Ultrasound Money, which handles 33.92% of payloads. Builder market share also remains concentrated, as Titan produces 52.16% of blocks. Total staked ETH represents about 31.98% of the supply. BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF filing states that an aggregate staking fee equals 18% of gross staking consideration.
The Pectra influence
The Pectra upgrade changed the math for large holders. EIP-7251 lets a single validator hold up to 2,048 ETH. This reduces the number of nodes needed to secure the network.
The 0x02 validator type handles rewards with a 1.5% relative advantage over 0x01 validators in 335-day windows. The upgrade introduces 0x02 credentials to support auto-compounding. Consensus-layer rewards accrue directly to the validator, which increases the effective balance over time. You must still manually trigger withdrawals for amounts below 2,048 ETH to claim these rewards.
The Pectra upgrade also includes EIP-7002 and EIP-6110. EIP-7002 allows validators to trigger exits via the execution layer through a smart contract call. This makes delegated staking safer because the delegator can force an exit without trusting the operator. EIP-6110 moves validator deposits on-chain to the execution layer. This change reduced deposit processing time from hours to minutes.
Efficiency increased.
Competition and risks
Competition is growing. Solana and other proof-of-stake networks offer rewards between 7% and 21%. Solana has already overtaken Ethereum in network fee generation, collecting $25.48 million compared to Ethereum’s $22.13 million.
The current exit queue remains a significant factor for those planning to leave their positions, as the network limits how much ETH moves through the system per epoch to maintain stability.
The queue length fluctuates.
You already know that slashing risk exists. A validator can lose ETH for double-signing. The initial slashing penalty is reduced, but higher balances face larger penalties in the event of slashing.
The exit queue hit a historical peak of 2.65 million ETH in September 2025. This spike followed an infrastructure provider’s decision to exit all validators. In 2026, the queue sits at zero, which shows low willingness among existing stakers to unstake.
The yield compression makes ETH a harder sell for yield-hungry institutions.
Will MEV rewards grow enough to offset the base APR drop?
