Nostr micropayments vs Lightning Network tipping

The Nostr Zap Protocol
NIP-57 defines the technical flow for social zaps. Payer clients construct signed kind 9734 zap request events containing the recipient’s pubkey, a relay list, the amount in millisatoshis, and the target event ID. The client calculates the recipient’s lnurl pay request url from the zaptag on the zapped event, or by decoding the lud16 field on the profile. To support zaps, the lnurl server adds an allowsNostr field and an nostrPubkey to the static endpoint. The client sends this event via HTTP GET to the recipient’s LNURL callback URL, and the recipient’s Lightning service then generates a kind 9735 zap receipt. This receipt confirms the payment and travels to the relays specified in the original request. Primal and Amethyst users leverage these tools to reward content creators. NIP-47, or Nostr Wallet Connect, allows these clients to send payment commands to remote wallets like Alby or Mutiny. Damus users on iOS encounter App Store restrictions that limit post-level zaps, though they can use a script to re-enable functionality. Zap volume exceeded 20 million within a two-week window in early 2025. Can decentralized social networks ever match the reach of centralized financial giants?
Scaling Bitcoin Payments
The Lightning Network provides the infrastructure for global Bitcoin movement. Users move value through payment channels without touching the base layer for every transaction. This network supports diverse commercial use cases:
| Service | Primary Function | Scale/Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Cash App | Custodial payments | 58 million monthly users |
| Square | Point-of-sale retail | 4 million merchants |
| River | Lightning trades | 5.2 million trades (Nov 2025) |
| mempool.space | Node monitoring | 17,000 nodes |
Lightning handles tasks from international remittances to machine-to-machine payments. In November 2025, River recorded 5.2 million trades totaling $1.1 billion. Roughly 80% of merchants in El Zonte tourist areas accept Bitcoin through Lightning. 1ML data shows 6,160 open nodes and 20,601 connections, while mempool.space reports 17,000 nodes holding 5,700 BTC. Because the Lightning Network scales through routing, wallets find the cheapest path through multiple hops to move value across the network without requiring users to manage complex individual channels or the constant monitoring of routing fees. Bitrefill allows gift card purchases, Travala facilitates travel bookings, ZEBEDEE enables in-game rewards, and Square enables retail payments.
Wallet Dynamics and Adoption
Wallet choice dictates the user experience. Custodial apps like Cash App reach massive audiences, but they hold the user’s keys. Self-custodial options like Phoenix manage channels automatically. Phoenix charges a 0.4% fee to create new channels and 1% for incoming liquidity. Breez charges a one-time fee of roughly 0.75% with a 2,000-sat minimum, making it a preferred choice for certain creators. Muun routes Lightning sends through on-chain submarine swaps, while Zeus connects users to LND or Core Lightning. You should consider whether you prefer the ease of a custodial interface or the control of a non-custodial node. Phoenix uses splicing to resize channels as needed. Public node counts fell to 17,400 from a 2022 peak of 20,700. Wallet of Satoshi pulled itself from the European Union in January 2026 to comply with MiCA and DAC8 regulations. The Lightning Network wins the adoption battle through sheer scale and commercial integration, while Nostr zaps remain a specialized social tool for the enthusiast.
