The economics of the Ethereum supply crunch and staking dominance

Ethereum exchange reserves hit a multi-year low, yet the price remains stuck. The 30-day average of Ethereum on trading venues reached 14,742,387.9 ETH, which represents a 30.21 percent drop from the 21,124,548.6 ETH recorded on July 18, 2025. The movement of 6,382,160.7 ETH out of exchanges since July 2025 amounts to approximately $15.4 billion at current prices. This shift moves assets from active trading toward long-term staking and self-custody. Binance alone saw its Ethereum balance fall from 3.90 million to 3.47 million ETH between August 25 and October 16, a decline of 11 percent over 52 days. I conclude that the supply crunch lacks the necessary demand to trigger a price explosion. Spot volume across major venues dropped from a seven-day average of $6.73 billion to $3.125 billion, a 53.6 percent decrease. On Binance, USDT reserves fell by 2.3 percent, which means $175 million in stablecoins left the venue alongside the ETH. This thinness in the order book amplifies moves in both directions, as seen on October 15 when $489 million of leveraged positions faced forced closure within an hour. A 30-day average provides a more honest measure than a daily reading because it smooths out the internal 200,000 ETH transfers exchanges make between their own addresses. The Friday price of $2,412.07 remains far below the $4,946.05 record.

Staking dominance and the liquidity hierarchy

Staking dominance defines the current Ethereum economy. Over 80.95 million ETH, or 50.18 percent of the total supply, remains in staking contracts. This concentration reduces the liquid supply available for immediate sale. Liquid staking and restaking protocols like Lido and EigenLayer manage much of this capital. Lido manages a large presence, although its market share fell to 25 percent recently, down from 32 percent in February. EigenLayer manages over $7 billion in restaked assets. I find the growing complexity of these layers difficult to ignore.

Metric Value/Detail
Ethereum Staking Ratio 31%
EigenLayer TVL $7 billion
Lido stETH Collateral (Aave/Maker) $10 billion
EIGEN Token Price $0.25
EIGEN Token All-Time High $5.65

Lido issues stETH to provide liquidity, and about $10 billion of stETH sits active as collateral across Aave, Morpho, and Maker. Approximately $100 million of stETH remains executable within 2% of redemption value. Rocket Pool takes a different approach, with over 620,000 ETH staked across 19,000 validators in 100+ global regions. EigenLayer allows users to restake ETH for extra rewards, but users accept extra risk beyond normal staking. The protocol’s slashing feature went live on April 17, 2025, to penalize malicious operators. Research identified 442 leverage staking positions involving 537,123 ETH, which totals $877 million.

Liquidity risks and the EigenLayer theft

Liquidity risks emerged when stETH lost its peg to ETH. Aave WETH loan rates jumped from 2% to 18% in a single week, which triggered a cascading liquidation of leveraged positions. This volatility follows large withdrawals from Aave, including a withdrawal of 167,000 ETH by a wallet linked to HTX. When stETH trades at a discount, such as the 3% discount observed on Curve, traders using stETH as collateral face liquidation. Lido warned that these leveraged positions require immediate de-risking to avoid loss. I see this as a fundamental threat to the stability of liquid staking.

Many traders use a recursive investment strategy where they use stETH as collateral to borrow more ETH on Aave, only to convert it back into more stETH. At Aave, the protocol allows users to borrow ETH equal to 73% of their stETH collateral. If the value of a loan exceeds 75% of the deposit, the position faces liquidation. EigenLayer faces its own security hurdles. The protocol implemented its slashing feature on April 17, 2025, to penalize malicious operators. An October 4 incident involving a compromised email thread led to the theft of 1,673,645 EIGEN tokens, valued at $5.5 million. The attacker sold these tokens via a decentralized swap platform and converted the proceeds to stablecoins. Can the market maintain confidence in restaking while these vulnerabilities exist? EigenLayer continues to operate with a $12.7 million annual deficit, as it spends $56.77 million in incentives against $13.6 million in fees.

Institutional interest and the ETH/BTC ratio

Institutional interest moves in a different direction than retail speculation. Kraken deposited 50,600 ETH, worth $1.07 million, into Eigencloud on May 26. Despite this, the EIGEN token trades at $0.25, which represents a 95.6 percent decline from its $5.65 peak. The Ethereum to Bitcoin ratio sits at 29.37 thousandths, a level near the June 7 low of 24.85 thousandths. This ratio suggests Ethereum lacks an edge over Bitcoin despite the massive exchange drain. The ratio was last lower on August 11, 2026. While Bitmine chairman Tom Lee predicted an Ethereum bull run, the price remains sensitive to long-term holder selling.

If you manage large ETH holdings, you must weigh the 3% to 4% native staking yield against the liquidity risks of liquid staking derivatives. The market value of all ether stands at $294.6 billion, which is 51.2 percent below the record of $4,946.05. The Friday price of $2,412.07 remains far below the $2,488.84 session high. ETH stays below its recent August high of $2,520. The ETH/BTC ratio reached a yearly high of 36.69 on October 21, 2025. Does the growing amount of staked ETH eventually offset the shrinking supply on exchanges?
