Arbitrum revenue and the Stylus expansion

Arbitrum remains the most profitable Ethereum layer 2 despite significant token price stagnation. The network generates the largest absolute revenue among optimistic rollups because it processes the highest transaction volume and maintains the longest-standing DeFi ecosystem. While fee revenue exceeds the direct costs of sequencer operation and data posting, the ARB token trades at a discount because governance has not yet implemented a fee-sharing mechanism to route sequencer margin to token holders. The Stylus upgrade, active on Arbitrum One and Nova, changes the development economics for complex applications. This technology uses a dual-VM architecture to execute WebAssembly instead of just EVM bytecode. Developers using Rust or C++ can achieve gas savings of 10x or more for computation-heavy tasks like cryptography or memory-intensive operations. This efficiency helps attract developers who prefer systems programming over Solidity, which currently has 20,000 developers compared to 3 million for Rust. Arbitrum’s monthly figures face pressure from Base’s growing transaction-volume share. In early 2026, Base saw 11.57 million daily transactions and 663,000 daily active addresses. Arbitrum’s DeFi TVL includes significant positions from GMX, Uniswap, Aave, and Camelot. The network maintains approximately $11.66 billion in TVL as of late August 2026. Arbitrum also holds $4 billion in stablecoin supply. The Arbitrum DAO controls a treasury of $3 – 4 billion in ARB tokens, but spending on grants has generated scrutiny. Can these performance gains alone sustain the network’s growth as competition from Base intensifies?
Timeboost and MEV capture
Timeboost has become a significant revenue driver for the Arbitrum DAO. This transaction ordering policy, introduced in late 2025, allows users to bid for an express lane to avoid a default 200ms delay. Since its April launch, Timeboost has generated almost $3 million in fees. These fees now account for almost half of the total income for the Arbitrum DAO.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Default block time | 250ms |
| Express lane delay | 200ms |
| Timeboost revenue share | 97% to DAO |
| Timeboost launch | April 2026 |
The mechanism captures value from searchers who want priority access for liquidations or arbitrage. This system also limits the impact of malicious MEV attacks by redirecting value to the community. You already know the basics of how priority fees function, but Timeboost specifically auctions time advantages every 60 seconds. The auction runs offchain and requires a Redis server and an auctioneer service to coordinate. The process involves deploying an ExpressLaneAuction contract and configuring the sequencer node with specific parameters to handle the auction rounds. This prevents latency-based spam because searchers must bid onchain for time advantages rather than competing with offchain hardware.
Orbit and the Expansion Program
The Arbitrum Orbit framework expands the economic footprint of the network through the Expansion Program. Any chain built on Orbit that settles outside the flagship Arbitrum One network must route 10% of its net protocol revenue back to the Arbitrum ecosystem. Of this amount, 8% goes to the Arbitrum DAO treasury and 2% goes to the Arbitrum Developer Guild. This 10% applies to sequencer profit, not gross transaction fees. Robinhood Chain, a high-profile deployment built on Orbit, recorded $568 million in trading volume on July 8, 2026. This massive volume surge came from the CASHCAT memecoin, which drove daily transactions from 1.2 million to 2.8 million. While the Expansion Program creates a new revenue stream from enterprise chains, the high volume in memecoins reveals the difficulty of attracting stable, institutional activity. Orbit chains maintain the ability to use custom gas tokens and third-party data availability layers like Celestia or EigenDA. These chains can configure throughput, block times as low as 100ms, and even permissioned access for regulated users. Robinhood’s $568 million volume day was driven by the CASHCAT memecoin. The market cap of CASHCAT grew to more than eight times the size of the chain’s entire tokenized real-world asset market. Orbit users can choose between Rollup or AnyTrust modes for data availability.
