Risks in Bitcoin’s $74,000 October 2026 rally

Macro volatility and Fed uncertainty
Bitcoin trades near $92,970 after a period of volatility. The September FOMC minutes, which the Committee released on October 7, show that most officials expected another rate increase before the end of 2026, even though the data from the labor market and inflation suggests a softer economic outlook. Most participants assessed that another increase would likely be appropriate by year end. This view follows a unanimous 12-0 vote in September to increase the target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. Many participants described a higher rate path as insurance against inflation staying above target. A smaller group said further hikes were necessary under their central forecast. Higher Treasury yields and macroeconomic uncertainty pressured the market on October 7. This pressure caused Bitcoin to touch $82,300. The sell-off triggered over $500 million in crypto liquidations. If you track the macro shifts, the October 14 CPI report matters more than the minutes. Core PCE inflation sat at 3.0% in August, while headline PCE was 3.4%. This was below the 3.2% estimate from Fed staff. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 29,000, and the unemployment rate hit 4.2%.
Tether liquidity and regulatory pressure
Tether minted 2 billion USDT in 20 minutes. This surge follows increased activity in the crypto markets. Tether has $189.5 billion in circulation as of May 2026. Its reserves include 80% to 84% US Treasury bills, 4% to 6% secured loans, 4% to 5% Bitcoin, and other investments. The June 30, 2026 reserves report showed total assets of $187.75 billion and total liabilities of $183.64 billion. This leaves $4.11 billion in net equity. Tether uses BDO Italia for quarterly attestations. It has never produced a full audit from a Big Four firm. This absence of a continuous audit creates a confidence gap. European exchanges including Binance, Kraken, Coinbase EU, and Crypto.com began delisting USDT spot pairs for EU users throughout 2025. The US GENIUS Act of 2025 requires 1:1 reserve backing in HQLA. Tether has not signaled it will register as a US payment stablecoin issuer. In October 2021, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission fined Tether $41 million for making untrue or misleading statements about its reserves. Tether also paid $18.5 million to the New York Attorney General earlier in 2021.

Institutional exit and whale activity
The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index recorded its longest consecutive negative period of 80 days from May 19 to August 6. This negative range exceeds the 40-day period from January 16 to February 24. This index indicates an exit of US institutional capital. On October 6, Bitcoin closed at $85,625. Trading volume reached $27.1 billion. Whale activity intensified on that day. 2,375 transactions moved 139,889 BTC, which is worth $11.98 billion. This volume is 20.58% above the 7-day average of 116,020 BTC. The top five moves totaled 44,448 BTC, or $3.81 billion. In the same week, 444 tracked whales turned accumulation-side, while 408 turned distribution-side.
Market levels and cycle peaks
Bitcoin faces resistance at $95,500 and $97,500. The support zone lies between $91,000 and $92,000. Analyst Benjamin Cowen suggests October 2026 might be a mid-cycle peak. He notes the probability of the top being in reached 50%. This view relies on macro conditions resembling 2019. On the 4-hour chart, price dropped from $95,480 to $91,917 with a burst of volume. This drop suggests sellers were exiting and stampeding. The 1-hour chart shows a clean breakdown with two red candles. Relative strength index readings at 53 and Stochastic at 54 suggest neutral momentum. The momentum oscillator is at 2,470. The MACD level is at 1,287. If Bitcoin closes multiple weeks below its 50-week moving average of $103,000, a deeper correction follows. Will the market defend the $91,000 floor?
