SSV Network scales validator diversity as Lido expands DVT use

Lido Finance integrates SSV technology into its Simple DVT Module to spread validator responsibilities across multiple operators. This integration uses the Blissful Bear cluster, which includes seven validators from Kiln, Cryptonative Systems, Blockshard GmbH, Luciola, Avaunt Staking, and Thunderhead. This specific cluster configuration reduces the reliance on a single node operator for each validator. Currently, Lido has over 600,000 ETH staked on the Beacon Chain, with every validator running on a single node operator.

The move to Distributed Validator Technology (DVT) addresses the risk where a single node operator failure, such as an infrastructure bug in a validator client, causes a validator to go offline. If a validator goes offline for extended periods, the network imposes slashing penalties on the staked ETH. DVT allows a validator’s private key to split into KeyShares across several node operators. In a cluster, if less than 33% of the participating nodes go offline, the remaining active nodes reach consensus on what to sign and produce valid signatures for staking duties.

The SSV Network provides the infrastructure to distribute validator keys among non-trusting nodes. This permissionless network allows users to select independent operators, helping to avoid reliance on a single entity or jurisdiction. This diversity helps mitigate risks from regulatory interventions or technical failures. In the US, regulator OFAC interventions previously caused more than half of mined Ethereum blocks to face censorship.

Feature SSV Network DVT Specification
Minimum Operators per Validator 4
Signature Type BLS (Additive)
Key Management Method Distributed Key Generation (DKG)
Security Mechanism Threshold signature scheme

Reducing single-client dependency

Ethereum’s security depends on client diversity to prevent chain-wide mishaps if a specific consensus or execution client contains a bug. If 2/3 of validators use the same client, a software error could disrupt the entire chain and cause significant monetary loss. DVT enables a single validator to run multiple different client configurations simultaneously across its node cluster. This setup increases the difficulty for an attacker to compromise a validator because they must compromise multiple different software setups and hardware configurations.

The SSV Network specifically enables this by allowing every operator in the network to choose their own validator client software and infrastructure. Stakers select the independent operators they trust to run the validator. This arrangement creates a layer of redundancy that traditional single-node setups lack. A single validator using a single client in one location creates a single point of failure. DVT spreads this risk by distributing duties across different machines, data centers, and geographical locations.

The current Ethereum validator landscape shows high concentration. Lido has over 142,000 validators run by 29 different entities. Coinbase manages around 55,000 validators on its own infrastructure. This concentration means that a failure in one provider’s infrastructure could impact a large portion of the network. DVT allows these large providers to distribute their operations across many non-trusting nodes, which reduces the impact of a single provider’s failure.

Operational shifts at SSV Labs

SSV Labs submitted proposal DIP-59 on October 21, 2026, to scale back development commitments for the SSV Network. This proposal shifts the focus from new product initiatives to core infrastructure maintenance. The developers plan to prioritize the stability of existing infrastructure through June 30, 2027. This shift follows periods of tightening DAO funding and difficult market conditions. Lower token valuations mean the organization must use more tokens to meet dollar-denominated obligations.

The DAO spent $9.91 million in 2025, which stayed within the original $11.6 million budget. However, market volatility affects the spending strategy. A token payment in January 2026 processed at $6.78 per token, while a July 2025 payment occurred at $10.47 per token. The transition toward a more conservative maintenance model means users should expect a slower release schedule for new features. The team prioritizes maintaining the current network over rapid expansion during these tight economic conditions.

The SSV Network remains an open-source DVT infrastructure. It provides the tools for splitting a validator key into multiple KeyShares to run an Ethereum validator across non-trusting nodes. Developers can use the network to distribute validators permissionlessly among globally decentralized node operators.

Financial Metric Value
2025 DAO Total Spending $9.91 million
2025 Original Budget $11.6 million
January 2026 Token Price $6.78
July 2025 Token Price $10.47

New revenue models and validator rewards

The SSV Network introduced Compose to enhance Ethereum staking through improved decentralization and security. Compose allows validators to opt into a permissionless participation model. This model lets validators earn staking rewards and additional yield from synchronous composability. Validators can also participate in MEV-boosting and sequencing for rollups. The initiative aims to redirect interop fees to validators and Ethereum rather than third-party bridges.

Compose design targets the rerouting of interop fees to rollups and validators, which could generate $80 million to $100 million annually in new fees. This could increase revenues for validators and the SSV DAO, reducing the need for external incentives. The SSV DAO previously moved to disburse over 1 million SSV tokens to community members to support the launch. To qualify for this, users must register validators on the network and become validators themselves.

Staking yields on Ethereum vary by provider. In September 2026, the network average staking yield sat between 2.5% and 2.6%. Lido’s stETH offered a rate of 2.27% after taking a 10% fee. Coinbase’s retail rate stood at 1.69% after a 35% commission.

Provider Rate (Sept 2026) Deductions
Network Average 2.5% to 2.6% None (before operator fees)
Lido (stETH) 2.27% 10% fee
Coinbase (cbETH) 2.34% Coinbase fee
Rocket Pool (rETH) 2.14% Node operator commission
Coinbase Retail 1.69% 35% commission

The SSV Network’s focus on infrastructure maintenance might slow the deployment of the Compose initiative. Will the proposed fee redirection reach the projected $80 million annual target? Node operators can run on SSV.Network to double their rewards by also operating on the network. Any ETH user can stake directly on the SSV Network or use staking services that embed DVT infrastructure.
