The economics of Ethereum’s October 2026 negative issuance

Validator and Staking Economics
EIP-7251 raised the maximum effective validator balance from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. This change allows operators to consolidate many 32 ETH validators into fewer 2,048 ETH validators to reduce DevOps overhead and peer-to-peer traffic. As of May 2026, 26% of validators use the 0x02 compounding model. This model keeps rewards inside the validator to grow the balance over time. Mohammed Benseddik and Benjamin Kraner found that 0x02 validators achieve a 0.04 percentage point median APR advantage over 0x01 validators over a 335-day window. This advantage is only 1.5% relatively. For small balances between 32 and 2,048 ETH, simulations predicted a 4.7% relative APR uplift. This uplift drops to 0.3% for validators with balances between 2,048 and 4,096 ETH. The total staked ETH grew 4.7M ETH since the Pectra upgrade, which is nearly $10.5B as of May 2026. Although the number of validators decreased 16% compared to pre-Pectra levels, the total staked amount increased. The initial slashing penalty for a 2,048 ETH validator is 0.024% instead of the previous 3.125% for 32 ETH validators, which minimizes the immediate capital loss for large-scale institutional operators during consensus failures through a much softer slashing curve. EIP-6110 moved deposits to the execution layer, reducing activation time from 12 hours to 13 minutes. EIP-7002 enables validator exits and partial withdrawals through standard execution-layer transactions. This aligns with regulatory and audit frameworks. The 0x02 credential model also enables top-ups and auto-compounding.

Scaling and the Deflationary Narrative
L2 transaction fees on major networks stay below $0.02. The Fusaka upgrade, which went live on December 3, 2025, added PeerDAS. This feature increased data throughput for rollups by 8x. Aggregate L2 TPS crossed 1.22K by late 2025, which scaled Ethereum’s base layer by about 20x. The network maintains a 45-day consecutive deflation streak. This streak surpasses the 2022 merge projections for Ultrasound Money. The daily ETH burn from blobs fell from 11.22 ETH to 3.26 ETH after the Pectra upgrade. This reduction in burn occurs because activity moved to rollups. EIP-7691 raised the blob target per block from 3 to 6, with a maximum of 9. Subsequent BPO1 and BPO2 forks pushed the blob target to 10 and then 14 per block. EIP-7623 increases calldata pricing for data-heavy transactions. This prevents large blocks from harming the peer-to-peer network. Post-merge, Ethereum issuance dropped from 13,500 ETH/day to 1,600 ETH/day. This 8x reduction is known as the triple halvening. The burn rate for PoS is roughly 5,000 ETH/day.
Institutional Adoption and Market Flows
Total staked ETH reached 38.6 million ETH, which is 32% of the total supply. Public companies, or DATs, reached 7.3 million ETH in holdings by March 2026. BitMine Immersion Tech alone staked over 4.4M ETH. Total Ethereum ETP and ETF assets under management reached $14 billion by May 2026. Daily new deposits to the Ethereum 2.0 contract reached 6,627 on June 2, 2025. Total Ethereum staking inflow reached 946,848 ETH on October 8, 2025. The staking participation grew from 28% to over 32% of staked ETH. You know that institutional flows drive these high-volume staking metrics. The ATH for total Ethereum staking inflow was October 8, 2025, while the ATH for daily new deposits to the Ethereum 2.0 contract occurred on June 2, 2025. Compared to Bitcoin, spot Bitcoin ETFs held $91.9 billion in assets as of March, while spot Ethereum ETFs held $12.1 billion.
Smart Accounts and Protocol Efficiency
EIP-7702 allows regular wallets to behave like smart contracts for a single transaction. This allows gas sponsorship and session keys. Smart-contract wallet behavior accounted for over 25% of new address activations by late 2025. EIP-2537 adds a BLS12-381 precompile for faster cryptographic verification. EIP-2935 allows the network to serve the last 8192 block hashes as storage slots. EIP-7549 moves the committee index outside of the signed attestation message. EIP-7840 adds a blob schedule to execution layer client configuration files. EIP-6110 allows validator deposits on the execution layer, reducing activation time to 13 minutes. EIP-7002 enables validator exits and partial withdrawals through standard execution-layer transactions. The Ethereum Foundation set a target validator count of 128,000. The roadmap includes Glamsterdam for mid-2026 and Hegota later in the year. Glamsterdam focuses on ePBS and parallel transaction processing. Hegota will introduce Verkle Trees and statelessness. EIP-7692 includes EOF changes like SWAPN, DUPN, and EXCHANGE instructions. Will the 0x02 migration continue at this pace?
