The economics of Starknet’s STRK staking yield compression

Starknet price fell 18.4% to $0.0958 in a 24-hour window. This decline follows a mid-October rally where the token climbed 82.9% over the month. On October 15, 127 million STRK tokens unlocked, representing 1.7% of the circulating supply. This unlock belongs to a 2 billion token wave. I see this sell pressure as a reaction to the supply increase. StarkWare also revised its token lock-in program to mitigate volatility. The company decided to release 1.5 billion tokens by the end of 2026. This replaces the original plan of 2 billion tokens. Instead of a 1.34 billion token unlock on April 15, the new schedule releases 64 million tokens on that date. The monthly release rate stays at 0.64% until March 2025. Then, the rate increases to 1.27% per month until March 2027. Santiment data showed the rally’s social signal peaked on October 11 with a score of 38.46. Since then, social sentiment cooled. On X, 37.45% of tweets show bullish sentiment, 8.05% are bearish, and 62.55% remain neutral. Trading volume for the token reached $421 million. Active addresses fell 63% and new wallets dropped 81% by October 13. The current market capitalization of Starknet is $451,995,000.
Yield divergence and the crossover price
BTC staking yields exceeded STRK yields when the STRK price stayed between $0.103 and $0.123. On October 11 and October 12, BTC staking paid 8.75% and 10.37% while STRK staking paid 7.69%, meaning BTC stakers earned more than STRK stakers when the price of STRK sat between $0.103 and $0.123. I find the crossover point tells me when BTC stakers gain an advantage. Current data from October 16 shows STRK APR at 7.71%. BTC APR exceeds STRK APR when STRK crosses $0.094. On October 16, a 37 BTC inflow into SolvBTC moved the total from 554 to 591 BTC. This inflow moved the crossover price from $0.085 to $0.094. This price level is 24% higher than the current market price. The price of STRK is $0.0595.

The floating alpha proposal
The community debates a proposal for a floating alpha to manage BTC yield. A fixed alpha makes BTC staking yield a bet on the STRK price. If the STRK price rises, the protocol’s USD spend on BTC scales with that price. This happens even if BTC inflows do not increase. The proposed mechanism follows SNIP-35 logic. It uses a per-epoch step cap to smooth the yield. This approach avoids the lags of a 7-day TWAP. I think the step cap helps maintain budget neutrality. The Monetary Council would review the $k$ parameter periodically. In backtests, $k=0.5$ would have paid BTC stakers +20% in USD. Using $k=0.6$ would have paid +28%. Recomputed smoothing with a 0.5% step cap produced a 4.7% peak APR. A 0.2% step cap produced a 6.2% peak APR. A 1% step cap produced a 4.4% peak APR. If STRK rises to $0.30 and the BTC stake remains unchanged, a fixed alpha leaves BTC stakers earning 1.6 times what STRK stakers earn. Even if the BTC stake doubles at $0.30, BTC stakers earn 12.3% in the fixed alpha scenario. If STRK reaches $1.00 and the BTC stake doubles, the fixed alpha yields 41.0% for BTC stakers. The protocol could also adopt a "cut-only" version where $\alpha_{max} = 25\%$. In backtests, a "cut-only" version resulted in an average BTC APR of 2.86% instead of 3.38%.
Validator concentration and network liquidity
Liquidity on Starknet has grown. Users have staked 800 million STRK, which is 19% of the circulating supply. Total staking, combining STRK and BTC, exceeds $100 million. 1,000 BTC bridged to the network since the launch of BTCFi. You know that liquidity depth affects how markets absorb sudden price movements. I observe that 29 of the 133 validators hold BTC pools. The top three operators control 90% of all staked BTC. One operator, 0x0725…220e, holds 285 BTC, which is 48% of the total. This operator has a 5% commission. Another, 0x024e…95c2, holds 152 BTC, or 26%. This operator charges 0% commission. A third, 0x00d3…0ee7, holds 94 BTC, or 16%. This operator has a 10% commission. The operator 0x01ac…2c00 holds 32 BTC, or 5%. All other validators hold less than 8 BTC. The 133 validators include 104 who are affected only by lower dilution. Will the new floating alpha enough to keep BTC stakers from fleeing during a STRK rally?
