The Superchain reaches its 15-chain interoperability standard

The Superchain is the most successful realization of the 2021 Bedrock vision. This network of Layer 2 and Layer 3 blockchains runs on the OP Stack and shares a common security model, governance framework, and cross-chain messaging infrastructure. Instead of each chain operating in isolation, Superchain members coordinate under a unified technical standard. The 2021 Bedrock update focused on scaling and decentralization for the Optimism ecosystem. This vision evolved into the current structure where members like OP Mainnet, Base, Zora, Mode, Mint, Worldchain, and Unichain grow together. The Superchain is a network of interconnected chains that prevents the fragmentation seen in earlier Ethereum rollups.

Scale and identity

Base reached a milestone of 10 million accounts using account abstraction. This scale is part of a broader trend where Superchain members drive massive user adoption. World Chain also emerged as a significant player with its identity-native L2 debut. This network is designed for humans and aims to scale the Worldcoin protocol to 1 billion people. More than 10 million people in 160 countries have already created a World ID and a compatible wallet. These users use World ID to prove they are unique humans via zero-knowledge proofs. This verification allows users to get priority blockspace and a gas allowance. Verified addresses also receive a free gas allowance to minimize friction for new users. You know the technical specifics of the OP Stack, so I will focus on the interoperability developments. While the expansion is rapid, some chains deviate from standard configurations of the OP Stack, which impacts how the Superchain rolls out features like interoperability to those specific members.

The interoperability standard

Interoperability is the core of the 15-chain standard. The Superchain uses the L2ToL2CrossDomainMessenger contract to let any contract on a Superchain chain send a message to any other Superchain chain without relying on an external relayer or an oracle that provides verification. This native messaging protocol allows contracts to read and write state on other chains without external bridges. The SuperchainERC20 standard also enables tokens to exist natively on every Superchain chain simultaneously. This differs from older methods where a user must lock a token on one chain to mint a derivative on another. With SuperchainERC20, the token is the same contract across all chains. The protocol guarantees the total supply through its own mechanisms.

Attribute Superchain Standard
Core Framework OP Stack
Messaging Protocol L2ToL2CrossDomainMessenger
Token Standard SuperchainERC20
Governance Model Optimism Collective
Fee Contribution 15% to Optimism Collective

The technical foundation includes shared L1 bridge contracts and a permissionless fault proof system. This system allows anyone to challenge an invalid state root during a challenge window. The long-term roadmap includes a shared, decentralized sequencer network to enable atomic cross-chain composability. Will the shared sequencer network eventually eliminate the need for individual chain sequencers?

The economic engine

The Optimism Collective manages the protocol upgrades and the distribution of sequencer revenue. The Collective consists of two chambers: the Token House and the Citizens’ House. The Token House includes OP token holders and their delegates who vote on treasury distributions and inflation adjustments. The Citizens’ House includes holders of a non-transferable Citizen badge who govern Retroactive Public Goods Funding. This funding mechanism distributes OP tokens to teams that contribute measurable value to the ecosystem. Shape is a creator-focused L2 that follows this model. Shape gives 80% of sequencer fees back to smart contract owners through a mechanic called "Gasback". Shape also contributes 15% of sequencer fees to the Optimism Collective to fund public goods. The current sequencer architecture is centralized because each chain runs its own sequencer. This setup means the network still relies on individual sequencers to order transactions before submission to Ethereum.
