Using Bitwise Bitcoin ETFs via Schwab for Roth IRAs

Schwab Crypto integration

Schwab Crypto provides direct access to bitcoin and ethereum trading with 75 basis points pricing on the dollar value of each trade. Clients use the platform to view and trade these digital assets alongside traditional holdings via Schwab.com or thinkorswim. Schwab Premier Bank, SSB acts as the custodian, while Paxos delivers sub-custody and trade execution services. Paxos is an OCC-regulated blockchain infrastructure provider. Investors use spot Bitcoin ETFs like IBIT, FBTC, or GBTC to gain price exposure without managing private keys or navigating cryptocurrency exchanges. These spot funds hold actual bitcoin in cold storage to track the market price. Because spot Bitcoin ETFs use a grantor trust structure, the fund’s decision to sell small amounts of bitcoin to cover sponsor fees results in a taxable gain or loss for you even if you never sell your shares. This sale creates phantom income. Schwab Crypto is available in all U.S. states except for New York and Louisiana. The SEC approved the listing and trading of 11 spot bitcoin ETPs on January 10, 2024. Schwab clients already hold approximately 20% of spot crypto exchange-traded products. A recent Schwab survey of 460 cryptocurrency owners identified low, transparent pricing and brand familiarity as top factors for choosing a firm.

Roth IRA rules and limits

You can fund a Roth IRA with bitcoin ETF exposure, provided your income falls below the IRS limits. The IRS prohibits direct transfers of cryptocurrencies from personal wallets into retirement accounts, so you must use cash for the purchase. The maximum annual contribution to all IRAs in 2026 is $7,500, while individuals aged 50 or older can contribute $8,600. You should check your MAGI to ensure you stay within the phase-out ranges.

Filing Status Roth IRA Income Phase-out (2026)
Single / Head of Household $153,000 – $168,000
Married Filing Jointly $242,000 – $252,000
Married Filing Separately $0 – $10,000

The IRS classifies digital assets as property rather than currency. The SEC approved in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto asset ETPs on July 29, 2025. This move brought spot Bitcoin ETFs in line with how gold and other commodity ETFs function. For reporting, brokers must provide Form 1099-DA to reflect digital asset transactions. To report capital gains or losses, you use Form 8949 and then carry the totals to Schedule D. You can make 2026 contributions until the tax filing deadline of April 15, 2027. For 2026, the 401(k) employee contribution limit is $24,500, while those aged 60 to 63 can contribute up to $35,750.

Managing volatility and allocation

Bitcoin price swings of 30% to 60% can impact a $10,000 investment heavily. In 2022, bitcoin experienced a massive 88% drop. In May 2025, bitcoin traded between $103,000 and $110,000, yet analysts predicted a 30% pullback from subsequent peaks. A 30% drop would cost a $10,000 position $3,000. Because IRAs do not allow loss deductions, the volatility of bitcoin can erode your total retirement savings without the tax benefit of offsetting losses. Many investors treat crypto in a Roth IRA as a venture sleeve to limit risk. This strategy involves keeping the allocation between 1% and 3% of total assets to ensure the bet does not change your retirement. How much of your portfolio should you risk on such a volatile asset? Harvard, the world’s largest university endowment, disclosed in late 2025 that its largest public market equity investment was in IBIT, with about $440 million. Rebalancing in a Roth IRA allows you to lock in gains from outperforming assets without incurring tax consequences. The most effective way to manage this is through a structured, low-allocation approach. Use the 2026 contribution limit to build your position through monthly transfers of $625.
