Coinbase cbETH vs Lido stETH: liquid staking token comparison

Lido remains the leader
Lido holds 8.9 million ETH and controls 62% of the liquid staking market. This dominance persists after the EigenLayer restaking migration drew $19.7 billion into the ecosystem. I favor Lido for those prioritizing deep integration. The stETH token is a rebasing token; the balance in a wallet increases daily as rewards accrue. Lido takes a 10% fee from staking rewards, which they split between node operators and the DAO treasury. The protocol uses 36 professional operators in the Curated Module and 412 active operators in the Community Staking Module. These numbers dwarf the competition. LDO holders govern the protocol through a two-phase voting system. This system includes a 48-hour time lock called an "objection phase" to protect stETH holders from harmful decisions. I see Lido as the liquid staking leader because they solved the liquidity problem. They issued stETH, an ERC-20 token that remains transferable and usable across DeFi. Lido exited Solana in October 2023 and Polygon in December 2024 to focus on Ethereum. While Rocket Pool uses a minipool design with 4 ETH bonds, Lido focuses on scale.
Comparing cbETH and stETH
| Type | Lido (stETH) | Coinbase (cbETH) |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Rebasing | Value-accruing |
| Fee | 10% | 25% |
| Liquidity | High (100+ protocols) | $44 million (DEX TVL) |
| Nature | Non-custodial | Custodial |
Coinbase manages 69,000 validators. I find their 25% commission on staking rewards incredibly high. They charge the highest fee among major platforms. Investors receive cbETH, which appreciates against ETH over time. Most of the cbETH supply, specifically 97.7%, stays on Coinbase. This concentration leaves the token with thin on-chain liquidity. I noticed only $44 million in DEX pool TVL for cbETH. If traders want to use assets in DeFi, they face significant slippage. Lido users benefit from deep integration across more than 100 protocols, while Coinbase users find that their cbETH remains trapped within the exchange because 97.7% of the total supply stays concentrated on the platform itself. Users can use stETH on Aave V3, where a Lido instance holds over $2 billion, but cbETH lacks that level of integration. Coinbase users can start with 0.001 ETH, which makes it accessible for small investors. Payouts arrive in accounts every 3-5 days. To exit, users must join a withdrawal queue with variable processing times.
Yield and risks
Lido’s popularity comes from its simplicity. Users stake ETH and receive stETH to keep their capital liquid. However, Lido faces risks like validator slashing and oracle data manipulation. To mitigate slashing, Lido maintains an ad hoc fund holding 6,600 stETH. The Oracle Committee consists of nine independent operators. If the majority of the committee reports incorrect balances, it could trigger negative rebases. Lido’s dual governance empowers stETH holders to safeguard their assets. If 1% of staked ETH is locked in opposition, a dynamic timelock delays execution up to 45 days. Coinbase is a safer choice for those who prefer a regulated, publicly-traded company. They handle all validator operations and technical complexities. You should look at the fees if you want to maximize your yield. I would skip the Coinbase option if you want to maximize your yield. Is the simplicity of a centralized exchange worth the high commission?
