Bitcoin exchange supply hits 5-year low as institutions move BTC

Bitcoin exchange supply sits at 6.6% of the 20.05 million total circulating supply after a 98% drop in the exchange supply ratio. This contraction in liquid availability follows a shift where investors move assets into cold storage. Illiquid supply, which includes coins held by entities with minimal spending behavior, reached 14.37 million BTC from 13.9 million BTC at the start of 2025. This means over 72 percent of all mined Bitcoin remains outside active trading environments. The reduction in exchange balances creates a supply crunch that can trigger sharp price movements if demand rises due to political instability. For instance, President Donald Trump recently introduced tariffs on international partners, and this caused traditional markets to fluctuate. You should watch if this lack of liquid supply prevents a major price correction.

Institutional custody and movement

Coinbase Institutional moved 1,700 BTC, worth roughly $142 million, to an unknown wallet. This transaction follows other large outflows, such as a 2,258 BTC move in June and a 659 BTC move in August. These transfers often indicate portfolio rebalancing rather than liquidation. US spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold 641,400 BTC, worth $73 billion, while private companies hold 281,752 BTC and government entities hold 649,954 BTC. Coinbase Custody Trust Company, a qualified custodian under New York state banking law, manages these assets using multi-party computation to secure private keys. The firm also uses Cross Domain Solution technology, which the US NSA and UK NCSC endorse for military-grade security. Coinbase Prime provides execution, financing, and custody on a single platform for institutional investors. It uses aggregated liquidity and advanced order types like RFQ. The platform supports over 40 blockchains and hundreds of assets. Also, a transfer of 3,267 BTC moved from an unknown wallet to Coinbase Institutional recently.

Long-Term Holder Supply 14.83 million BTC
Bitcoin ETF Holdings 641,400 BTC

Long-term holder dominance

Long-term holders, who keep coins for at least 155 days, control 14.83 million BTC. This figure shows 76.09% of the circulating supply and exceeds the previous record of 12.66 million BTC set on October 19, 2020. The current level of 14.83 million BTC does not just break the previous downtrend, as it blows past the 2020 peak by a wide margin, and it shows a 17% increase in long-term holder dominance. This accumulation phase contradicts the selling pressure seen in previous cycles. Most of the supply sits in dormant wallets or institutional vaults, leaving only 11.2 million BTC in active trade. The concentration of BTC in illiquid hands, specifically in wallets that historically spend little or nothing of what they receive, now reaches record levels across the entire global network. The market remains weak as Bitcoin trades below the True Market Mean of $76,600 and the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis of $72,200. Will the current concentration of supply among strong hands prevent a deeper price correction?

Divergence in privacy assets

The crypto market shows a sharp divergence between Bitcoin and privacy-focused assets. Bitcoin remains 36% below its October 6, 2025, high of $126,000. In contrast, the privacy sector market capitalization rose to $33.6 billion, a 373% increase from the $7.1 billion recorded a year ago. Zcash (ZEC) reached a market cap of $8.65 billion by August 17, 2026, after trading at $518. Monero (XMR) reached a $7 billion market cap and doubled in price over the past year. These privacy assets outperformed as investors sought on-chain anonymity. While many exchanges delisted privacy coins due to compliance concerns, the sector saw a 90% gain in the 30 days leading up to September 2026. Dash also contributed to this rally, jumping 17.5% to $56.85. Bitcoin holdings by public companies total 1,264,579 BTC, while DeFi and other protocols hold 369,595 BTC.
