Ethereum genesis wallets reactivate in 2026

The 2014 Genesis era

The 2014 Ethereum crowdsale distributed 60 million ETH to participants at a price of $0.31 per token. This 42-day sale ran from July 22 to September 2, 2014, and raised approximately 31,591 BTC, which was worth about $18 million. Participants received their allocations when the mainnet launched in July 2015. The price was low. The scale is massive. I find these early entries unmatched.

Vitalik Buterin conceived the platform in late 2013 to allow for a general-purpose programming layer. He chose the name after browsing science fiction elements on Wikipedia. The founding team included Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin. Beyond the 60 million ETH sold to the public, the creators pre-mined 12 million ETH. They split this amount between the Ethereum Foundation and early contributors, with 6 million ETH allocated to each.

You know the volatility of this market.

2026 Whale awakenings

Several Genesis era wallets moved large sums in 2026 after years of silence. In August 2026, onchain observers reported a dormant wallet containing 2,680 ETH worth $5.05 million. That holder spent $830 in 2015 to acquire those tokens. Another holder moved 2,000 ETH on August 8, 2026. This transfer, which Whale Alert tracked, holds a current value of $3.8 million. The cost was $620. These funds went to Coinbase according to Arkham Intelligence data.

Wallet Movement Type ETH Amount 2014/2015 Cost 2026 Value
11-year dormant wallet 2,680 ETH $830 $5.05 million
Pre-mine holder 2,000 ETH $620 $3.8 million
ICO participant 10,000 ETH $3,100 $23.1 million

An ICO participant moved 10,000 ETH to a new address on a Tuesday evening after staying dormant for more than 10 years, which represents a $23.1 million value from a $3,100 initial investment. The address, 0xCD5…7a336, received the Ethereum on July 30, 2015. The movement, which Lookonchain identified on X, yielded a 7,465-fold increase in value.

Dormant supply and lost keys

Large portions of the supply remain stuck. Rain Lohmus, the founder of Estonia’s LHV Bank, holds 250,000 ETH in a wallet that he cannot access because he lost the private keys. He paid $75,000 for this stake in 2014. This holding is worth about $480 million. I find the existence of such massive, inaccessible wealth striking. A KeychainX study found that 621 original genesis wallets have never sent a single transaction. These 621 wallets hold 1,421,008 ETH, which equals about $2.7 billion at a price of $1,930. This amount equals 2.4% of the 60 million ETH sold in the presale.

The KeychainX study also identified 30 wallets that moved for the first time in 2025 and 2026. These 30 wallets sent 67,900 ETH, which equals about $131 million. Vitalik Buterin remains the largest individual holder with access to his wallet, which contains 224,000 ETH. The 2,680 ETH wallet move on August 11 showed a return of over 605,000% for that user. Why do so many owners forget their passwords?

The KeychainX study notes that 22 of the 30 wallets emptied their balances almost completely, while eight wallets only moved part of their holdings. One wallet moved 40,000 ETH in 2025. This pattern shows how some early adopters reactivate their positions after a decade of dormancy.
