How Ethereum ETF inflows are changing Grayscale’s ETHE discount

The September shift in capital
US spot Ethereum ETFs pulled in $445 million in net capital during September, exceeding the $467 million Bitcoin ETFs attracted. The Bitcoin ETF market saw a $463 million outflow between September 8 and September 11, which effectively erased the massive $731 million single-day inflow from September 3 and redirected a significant amount of capital toward Ethereum products. Ethereum ETFs maintained momentum through the middle of the month and recorded $216 million in inflows on September 11 alone. BlackRock’s ETHA product drove much of this, adding $148.8 million on September 11 and $80.5 million on September 14. On September 1, BlackRock’s ETHA added $11.2 million while Fidelity’s FETH added $4.81 million and Morgan Stanley’s MSSE added $2.34 million. This momentum follows a breakout month in August when Ethereum ETFs saw $1.75 billion in net inflows, which was their strongest monthly performance in a year. The momentum cooled on September 17 when Ethereum ETFs saw a $39.2445 million net outflow. This outflow occurred even as Fidelity’s FETH recorded a $1.8291 million inflow and VanEck’s ETHV recorded a $1.7893 million inflow on that same day. The institutional rotation into Ethereum via ETFs is a reality. Total cumulative net inflows for Ethereum ETFs reach approximately $13.5 billion since their launch, a figure that remains a fraction of the $55 billion Bitcoin ETFs captured.
Fee competition and product differences
Fidelity reduced its management fee for the Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF from 0.39% to 0.32% on January 13, 2025. This reduction placed its 0.25% expense ratio in a competitive range alongside other major issuers. Grayscale introduced staking functionality to its Ethereum products in late 2025 and provides investors with access to yield. This distinction matters for institutional investors who require specific justifications for crypto allocations. Do these yield-bearing products secure long-term dominance? You should keep in mind that Grayscale’s ETH has maintained stable inflows without net outflows in the Ethereum ETF space. BlackRock’s IBIT became the fastest ETF to surpass $70 billion in assets and achieved this significant milestone in under a year. The Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH) launched on March 28, 2024, and carries an annual expense ratio of 0.25%.
| Fund Name | Ticker | Expense Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund | FBTC | 0.25% |
| Fidelity Ethereum Fund | FETH | 0.25% |
| BlackRock iShares Ethereum Trust | ETHA | Not stated |
The institutional landscape
BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale manage over 85% of all crypto ETF assets, totaling about $123 billion. BlackRock’s IBIT holds approximately $76 billion in assets, while Fidelity’s FBTC holds $18 billion and Grayscale’s BTC holds $4.3 billion. BlackRock’s IBIT and ETHA account for $70 billion in assets, a sum that equals half of the total crypto ETF AUM. While Ethereum ETFs saw $1.75 billion in net inflows in August, they still trail the $55 billion cumulative haul of Bitcoin. Institutional interest remains high, as 75% of investors surveyed by Nickel Digital Asset Management expect cryptocurrencies to join institutional portfolios within five years. The survey also found that 66% of respondents see cryptocurrency as the asset class with the biggest opportunity to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns over the next five years, followed by private equity at 64% and emerging market equities at 61%. You should recognize that Ethereum ETF daily inflows remain at roughly 60% of Bitcoin ETF levels. BlackRock’s IBIT absorbed over 90% of Bitcoin ETF inflows, while ETHA captured approximately 60% of Ethereum inflows. The Ethereum ETF net asset ratio reaches 5.15% of the total market cap, with cumulative net inflows reaching $13.106 billion, according to SoSoValue. The initial surge in Ethereum ETF inflows is clearly tapering.
