The $65,000 Bitcoin trap after Fed rate cut

The $65,000 Resistance Failure

Bitcoin reached $64,133 after the Federal Reserve’s 50 basis point cut. Traders rushed toward the $65,000 resistance level, which was the previous breakout high from August 24. This movement above the 200-day moving average at $64,000 appeared to signal a trend change. Quant funds and risk managers watch this 200-day average to identify if a long-term trend is rising or if it is deteriorating. I call this a bull trap. When Bitcoin price moves above a major resistance level like $65,000 but fails to hold that level during a retest, the resulting reversal often traps many retail traders who entered due to fear of missing out.

A bull trap occurs when a price breaks resistance and attracts buyers, only to reverse lower. This leaves long positions caught on the wrong side of the move.

The market lacked depth.

Technical Indicators and Weak Momentum

Low volume signals a fakeout. I noticed the breakout lacked the participation needed to confirm the trend. Volume stayed flat while the price tested $65,000. You should always compare breakout volume with recent average volume to see if the move has conviction.

Indicator Observation Signal
200-day MA $64,000 Resistance
RSI Divergent Bearish momentum
Volume Flat False breakout

The Relative Strength Index also signaled a reversal. Price made a higher high near the $65,000 zone, but RSI made a lower high. This bearish divergence suggests momentum is weakening. RSI is usually interpreted with levels like 70 for overbought and 30 for oversold, but in breakouts, traders watch for momentum strength. If RSI stays above 40 during consolidation, buyers are in control. Here, it did not. Traders also watch the MACD histogram to see if momentum is increasing. A bullish MACD crossover near resistance suggests upward momentum. If the histogram fades, the rally loses force. Many traders entered because of FOMO. They expected the 50 basis point cut to drive prices higher. However, the failure to hold $65,000 suggests the trend remains down.

Why ignore the RSI?

Traders enter after seeing green candles. They expect the upward movement to continue. However, a valid breakout requires a decisive close above resistance. A price break on low volume is the first warning sign. If the price falls through the level, the breakout is invalid.

Liquidation Cascades

Liquidations destroy capital. The drop below $65,000 triggered massive forced exits. Total crypto liquidations reached $1.8 billion. Over $1.5 billion of that came from long positions. Bitcoin traders alone saw more than $800 million wiped out. This mirrors how falling spot prices push leverage into liquidation cascades.

Thin order book liquidity allows small orders to move the price sharply. Sellers used the rally near resistance to exit positions. This pressure pushes the price back into the previous range. When price closes back below the resistance, the bull trap is confirmed.

The move failed.

I would have avoided the $65,000 entry. A successful entry requires the price to break out, pull back, and hold the level as support. If the price does not hold, it is a failed breakout. The 200-day moving average at $64,000 is the next line in the sand. If that level fails, the downturn could deepen.

Traders lost money.
