The Bitcoin ETF fee war and Grayscale’s market divergence

Low-cost access
Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) maintains the lowest expense ratio at 0.14%. This rate undercuts the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC), which charges 0.15%. You already know that even small percentage differences compound over years. Most issuers slashed fees to attract inflows. Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) charges 0.20% after reducing its management fee from 0.24%. ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) charges 0.21%. VanEck Bitcoin ETF (HODL) charges 0.20% after its fee waiver ended on July 31, 2026. Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) and iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) both charge 0.25%. The market includes twelve spot Bitcoin ETFs trading on U.S. exchanges, following the August 2026 liquidation of Hashdex’s DEFI.
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) charges 1.50%.

Volume and volatility
IBIT dominates the market with $47 billion in assets under management. Its 30-day median bid-ask spread stays at 0.021%. In contrast, the BTC spread sits at 0.079%. IBIT’s volume reached $2.72 billion over the last month. GBTC’s volume reached only $140.27 million. The Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) provides a safer low-cost default for many investors because it possesses two years of operating history and consistent tracking compared to the newer MSBT.
IBIT leads in liquidity.
Bitcoin prices fell below $61,000 during the February 2026 volatility. This drop followed a peak above $126,000. IBIT maintained smooth trading through that period despite the drop. The fund saw daily trading volumes exceed 80 million shares. IBIT’s 2026 year-to-date return reached -13.17%. GBTC’s 2026 year-to-date return reached -13.93%. IBIT holds a Sharpe ratio of -0.76 while GBGB holds -0.78. IBIT maintains a 6-month volatility of 26.72% compared to GBTC’s 26.47%. Will MSBT maintain its lead as it grows?
The Grayscale divergence
Grayscale’s products show a massive split in investor behavior. The Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) pulled in $37.06 million on a recent Monday in August, even as broader Bitcoin ETFs saw $145 million in total redemptions that same day. The Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) offers a 0.15% expense ratio. This competition forces issuers to prioritize fee reductions. This contrast remains sharp against the 1.50% fee for the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).
GBGB remains expensive.
Existing holders of GBGB face high costs. For a $50,000 investment, GBGB costs $750 per year. In comparison, IBIT costs only $125 per year for the same amount. IBIT saves investors $625 annually on that position. Moving from GBGB to a cheaper fund like IBIT or the Bitcoin Mini Trust involves evaluating capital gains taxes on any unrealized gains. BTC holds 0.000442 BTC per share, whereas IBIT holds 0.000566 BTC per share. Most spot Bitcoin ETFs, including BTC and IBIT, rely on Coinbase for custody, but VanEck uses Gemini and Fidelity uses Fidelity Digital Assets. A $10,000 investment in BTC results in a $35 difference in fees over ten years compared to MSBT.
