The shift in Bitcoin ETF options liquidity and market maturity

FBTC liquidity and volume

I observe FBTC options providing a specific, though smaller, avenue for Bitcoin exposure. On September 11, 2026, 2,310 FBTC option contracts changed hands. The put/call volume ratio of 0.14 shows that traders favored calls in that session. I see $361.86K in call premium moved compared to $31.94K in put premium. Total open interest for FBTC sits at 28,745 contracts. This includes 16,351 call contracts and 12,394 put contracts. The put-call open interest ratio is 0.76.

FBTC remains a secondary choice.

IBIT dominance and the market scale

IBIT leads the market. It holds $65 billion in assets under management. This ETF controls 75% to 80% of total Bitcoin spot ETF options trading volume. I find FBTC holds only 11%. IBIT’s daily options volume averages between $2.7 billion and $3.0 billion in notional value.

The gap is huge.

While IBIT maintains roughly $65 billion in assets under management, FBTC holds approximately $15 billion, which creates a massive disparity in liquidity for traders needing to execute large orders today. You should note the spread difference. A $68 strike for FBTC has a bid-ask spread of $0.45, whereas the IBIT spread at that same level was only $0.02. IBIT is far more liquid. IBIT already surpassed GLD.

Institutional demand and market maturity

The market has matured. IBIT options began trading on November 19, 2024. On that first day, 354,000 contracts traded with $1.9 billion in notional exposure. By April 2026, IBIT open interest reached $27.6 billion. This surpassed Deribit’s $26.9 billion open interest. Institutional demand drives this. The call-to-put ratio for IBIT compressed from 4.3:1 at launch to 1.8:1 by December 2025. This indicates a shift toward hedging. I see that since July 2025, aggregate Bitcoin options open interest exceeded $60 billion in futures open interest. I see volatility trends changing too. In January 2026, Fidelity Digital Assets documented 17 new all-time lows in Bitcoin’s one-year realized volatility. On July 1, 2025, IBIT skew reached 33.4% while BTC skew was 18.1%. IBIT convexity reached 22.5% compared to 12.0% for BTC. This coincided with the SEC raising IBIT position limits from 25,000 to 250,000 contracts.

Metric FBTC (Sept 2026)
Total Open Interest 28,745 contracts
Call Open Interest 16,351
Put Open Interest 12,394
Put/Call Volume Ratio 0.14

I see the market scale is enormous. IBIT’s popularity grew so much that its open interest caught up to GLD in total capital weight. IBIT’s raw contract count reached 7 million, whereas GLD averages 700,000. Even though GLD trades at a much higher price of $430, IBIT’s total options notional value is close to GLD’s $30 billion. The product landscape expands. Calamos launched CBOJ, the first 100% downside-protected Bitcoin ETF, on January 22, 2025. It uses Treasury bonds and CBOE Bitcoin US ETF Index options. Other products with 90% and 80% protection levels followed. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT launched on April 8, 2026. It has an expense ratio of 0.14%. This is one basis point below the 0.15% fee of the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust. BlackRock launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF on June 16, 2026. This fund writes covered calls against 25% to 35% of its NAV monthly. The SEC also approved cash-settled QBTC options in May 2026. This product tracks the Nasdaq Bitcoin Index.

Will QBTC steal liquidity from existing ETF options?
