The ProShares BITO legacy and the rise of BlackRock IBIT

The mechanics of BITO and its futures strategy
The transition to spot products and IBIT dominance
The SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs on January 10, 2024. Since that date, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has dominated the U.S. market. IBIT collected $63.939 billion in net inflows from January 2024 through September 3, 2026. BlackRock’s IBIT collected $63.939 billion in net inflows since January 2024, which means it accounts for 115.2% of the category’s total net inflows even as every other fund in the group combined recorded $8.427 billion in net outflows. While Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) saw $27.653 billion in net redemptions since the January 2024 launch, IBIT’s scale helps the entire category. On April 8, 2025, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $93.65 million. On that day, Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund saw $79.12 million exit, and Ark Invest’s ARKB saw $74.70 million exit. BlackRock’s IBIT saw $40.67 million in net inflows during that same session. Morgan Stanley’s Access Bitcoin ETF saw $30.60 million in net inflows on that same day. The total US spot Bitcoin ETF category accumulated $57.29 billion in net inflows since its launch. IBIT alone holds approximately $64.8 billion of the $102.84 billion in total assets held across all US spot Bitcoin ETFs as of October 26, 2026.
Structural and performance disparities
Investors weigh different structural trade-offs when selecting Bitcoin exposure. BITO relies on derivatives, while IBIT holds the cryptocurrency directly. You probably realize that BITO provided the first regulated way to access Bitcoin through a brokerage account. IBIT functions as an exchange-traded commodity trust, whereas BITO operates under the Investment Company Act of 1940. IBIT maintains 1.375 billion shares outstanding with a 0.25% sponsor fee and a 0.02% 30-day median spread. The fund holds 696,875 BTC with a fair value of $74,720,071,026 as of June 30, 2025.
| Specification | ProShares BITO | BlackRock IBIT |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Holding | Bitcoin Futures | Spot Bitcoin |
| Expense Ratio | 0.95% | 0.25% |
| Regulatory Framework | 1940 Act Company | Commodity Trust |
| Net Assets (Sept 2026) | $1.49 Billion | $63.44 Billion |
| Cumulative Inflows | N/A | $66.24 Billion |
BITO carries a higher expense ratio of 0.95% compared to IBIT’s 0.25%. BITO faces basis risk and roll costs that IBIT avoids. IBIT provides tighter liquidity because of its scale. The regulatory environment changed in July 2025 when the SEC authorized in-kind creations and redemptions for IBIT, which improved arbitrage mechanics.
The concentration of US Bitcoin ETF flows
Market activity shows how heavily one product influences the category. On September 3, 2026, IBIT attracted $454 million in inflows. On September 4, 2026, IBIT pulled in $117.4 million. On August 27, 2026, IBIT pulled in $277.6 million, while the entire US spot Bitcoin fund category saw $242.3 million in inflows. These massive moves show how one fund carries the market. On October 26, 2026, IBIT captured $110.3 million of the $110.3 million in net inflows for the entire category. On September 2, 2026, IBIT brought in $115.4 million after the category posted a $236.5 million outflow. This behavior indicates that IBIT effectively acts as the primary entrance for new capital. The IBIT cumulative inflow total exceeds $66 billion, while the total category inflow since launch is $57.29 billion. Will the concentration of capital in a single issuer eventually create systemic risk for the broader Bitcoin market?
